LAMHA FAQs

What is Mental Illness?

Mental Illness is a term used for a group of disorders causing several disturbances in thinking, feeling or relating. They result in substantially diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Does LAMHA provide counseling?

We do not provide counseling or therapy. We do not have licensed therapists or physicians on staff. The Mental Health Association works closely with community mental health centers and private providers in coordination of care for our clients.

Who does Mental Illness affect?

Mental Illness can affect persons of any age – children, adolescents, adults and the elderly – and can occur in any family. Several million people in this country suffer from a serious, long term mental illness. The cost to society is high due to lost productivity and treatment expense. Patients with mental illness occupy more hospital beds than do persons with any other illness.

Is there anyone available to address mental health issues at our next meeting, special event or class presentation?

Yes, we would love to provide a knowledgeable mental health professional to speak at your next event.
Please call 225 929-7674 and ask to speak with Melissa Silva.
